I write for a group called Five Minute Friday. They give me a one word writing prompt. Today’s word is generous. I have five minutes to write about generosity..

Oh, this is going to be easy, I thought. I am very generous. I thought of examples of my own generosity to the poor and the hurting. Then I read a couple of other people’s blogs. They wrote about the generosity of others and the generosity of God. I felt ashamed of myself for my pride.

God gave His only Son. He let him be whipped, humiliated and nailed to a cross. Jesus gave His life and willingly died on a cross for us. He paid for all of our sins. The Bible says if we confess our sins, ask God to forgive us, turn from our sins and trust in Jesus He will give us eternal life. We will live in beautiful mansions and walk on streets of gold. There will be no more tears, sickness, suffering or death in heaven. What could possibly be more generous than that? I could never sacrifice one of my own children the way God did for us.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes on Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16

If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:9

For whoever shall call on the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13

Thank you Father for the generous gift of your Son. Thank you Jesus for dying on the cross and giving me eternal life after I repented of my sins and trusted in you. Remind us often of your generous gift to us. If there is a reader who has never repented and believed in your Son may do so right now, right here today.

  1. My friend, please do not hesitate
    to share your generosity,
for I find that you’re true and straight,
    inspiring the likes of me.
Sure, you cannot match the Lord
    who gave His only Son,
but I hope we’re in accord
when I say plainly that one
thing that you must never do
is hide light beneath a bushel-basket.
Just shine out, the lovely You,
and if someone blows a gasket,
let their words slide off your back,
for it’s your grace and poise they lack.

  2. Andrew, I deleted my original post. God blesses me in so many ways- He is so generous with me. In return I give a small monthly amount to a homeless shelter, a pregnancy center, a group that serves children in a poor section of town and a missionary that college students and prison inmates. I feel we all should help those who need a helping hand.

  3. We learn and grow in generosity due to the generosity we have received from the Lord. It’s good to be reminded every now and then that His generosity cost Him everything. And through His generosity, we have gained all.

  4. Terri, He truly is generous. It seems to take a word prompt to reaffirm that and see it anew. Thanks for sharing. Kath, your FMF neighbour at #28 this week.
